Small but mighty! This repinique can still call the bateria to “Look up! Time to play!” This drum can be used for Rio Style batucada or Samba Afro/Samba Reggae styles as well.
This little samba drum is great for smaller sized adults and great for kids. It is lightest repinique at Go Samba. The compact size makes it a great choice as a drum to travel with.
This drum has a 10” diameter head and a 12” deep aluminum shell which is smaller and lighter than the more common 12” x 12” drums. The hardware on this little drum comes with the lovely brassy color and style from IVSOM.
The heads that come on the drum are IVSOM branded single ply plastic 5 mils thick. When these heads are spent I replace them with Remo Diplomats which are 7mls thick. You could also use Remo Ambassador heads but they’re a little thicker at 10mls. The diplomat heads are my preference. I strongly suggest experimenting with different configurations and figure out what you like.
The style of music you play will determine what type of stick you use with the drum.
Rio style samba the repinique is usually played with one stick and one “hand drum hand”. The stick is held in the dominant hand. And the other hand plays slaps, tones, and ghost notes.
Two long flexiable plastic sticks are used for Bahian styles. One stick in each hand. These whippy stick, or wappers are perfect for hitting rim shots on every note.
Generally, shoulder straps are used for Rio style samba players. The repinique will hang across your body at a convenient angle for your weaker hand to make the slaps and tones etc. The angle also works out great for getting the rim shots with the stick. Go Samba has shoulder straps in many colors. Let me know if you want custom colors.
Bahian style repinique players use a waist strap. This allows the drum to hang straighter in front of the body. This makes it easier for you to hit the drum with the sticks in both hands. The drum hangs pretty low.
I carry lots of straps in many colors. And I can custom order colors for you.
You can also place this drum on a drum stand or a snare stand when playing multiple other instruments.
IVSOM puts extra thought and intention into his products. A machinist by training and a percussionist by passion he blends these skills to create high quality, well designed and well crafted instruments.
