Aluminum 4 string caixas are very popular in the U.S. The drum is nice a light with a dry but buzzy caixa sound. A classy drum.
It doesn’t hurt that the instrument itself is beautiful. Shiny aluminum body with the brassy color hardware and everyone knows it’s an IVSOM.
You will be happy you have the lighter weight aluminum body caixa on the last ½ mile of the parade and the last ½ hour of rehearsal.
Most commonly, this drum is held on by a shoulder strap that runs over your shoulder. The caixa hangs at an angle and you hold the stick in “traditional grip”. The drum is deep enough to not flop forward on your body like some of the drums that are manufactured by factories in Asia. IVSOM knows what they are doing.
Need a strap? Check out the line of Macapart straps in the store.
This drum can also played em cima style which is up on the shoulder and arm. Assuming you’re right-handed, if you play with this technique you use a little dorky stick in your left hand and a normal sized drum stick in your right.
As a caixa player you lay down a solid groove matrix over your group. The other players rely on you to keep the fabric of the rhythm smooth, without snags and tears. The patterns color the ensemble’s character. You and the chocalho’s move butts with your swingy high rattly buzz.
This is a great drum for a beginner but also a drum that you will never outgrow. This drum can become your friend, a life long partner in practice sessions, your reliable buddy during performances, your co-adventurer in all the fun of being in a samba community.
IVSOM puts extra thought and intention into his products. A machinist by training and a percussionist by passion he blends these skills to create high quality, well designed and well crafted instruments. You will not be disappointed with an IVSOM drum’s quality and standards. Plus they’re pretty!
